Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi stated that U.P Chiefminister Mayawati was never serious on MGNREGA in the state and instead she said that the scehem is not beneficial for U.P. He was on a five-day tour to the state.
The Youth Congress leader talked about the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). He said that there have been a lot of benefits in states like Haryana, Kerala, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh but not a penny of it in UP.
“What did we do? World’s biggest programme, the MGNREGA – we brought. The thought was that since people from villages have to migrate in absence of employment so we should create employment for them. Go to Andhra and ask the women there, they will say yes there have been a lot of benefits. But you go to UP and ask the poor, they will say they don’t get money. The ministers, the village heads take the money.”
“We talked of implementing this in the whole of country. We went to UP and put forward our plan before your Chief Minister Mayawati. She told in Lucknow that no one will be benefited. She travels in helicopter. She doesn’t come to your house, doesn’t eat and drink at your house. She said there won’t be any benefits from this. Yes, benefits happened, it happened to the ministers, the bureaucrats, the BSP workers.”
