Blaming the Uttar Pradesh government for alarming unemployment Congress (I) has said Mayawati government has been misusing Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) funds. This scheme is most ambitious program prepared by Congress (I)-led UPA government at the Centre. It is a poverty alleviation program meant to generate guaranteed minimum 100 days employment for rural people including artisans, landless laborers and women. As Rahul Gandhi has said it puts money directly in the pocket of poor. Each so employed persons gets Rs 120 per day x 100 days which works out to Rs 12,000. There is no intermediary like contractor as government is direct employer. But the benefits of the scheme are not reaching the needy poor for whom the scheme is meant to help. Instead Mayawati government has spent the funds on items like buying toys, tents, calendars, laptops and paying transportation charges. This confirms that Mayawati government is not interested in the welfare of the poor people, said Congress (I).
