Sonia Gandhi always stressed for the need to put an end to violence against women
Sonia Gandhi, the Congress President and UPA Chairperson believed that just making laws would not prevent crimes. The most fundamental issue is that the mindset and old thoughts of our society have to be changed. In this modern society, we must be ready to ensure equal rights for women; it is our responsibility and a challenge. His mature and effective leadership and initiative led India to become one of the leading markets in telecommunication and Information technology.
Rajiv Gandhi created a separate identity for himself and he also was successful in taking forward Indira Gandhi and Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru’s initiatives as well. He scripted a new vision for the Non-Alignment Movement (NAM) - Nuclear disarmament. He was a great believer of peace and this belief propelled him to propose the idea of disarmament. He championed the cause of NAM, which he saw as a very important pedestal to facilitating peaceful relations between nations. He realized the futility of spending millions on arms and ammunition, and the wild pursuit of arms race, when a huge section of the population was starving.
Rajiv Gandhi played a vital role to improve the bilateral relationships with the United States of America and subsequently expanded the economic and scientific cooperation with it. A revived foreign policy, emphasizing on the economic liberalization and information and technology helped India to find a mark in the global map.

India’s role is considered instrumental in establishing the South Africa Fund under the cause of Non-Alignment Movement and thus provided support for many South African countries in their struggle for independence through this fund. Rajiv Gandhi’s farsighted initiative also resulted into formation of G15 countries for promotion of the non-alignment movement further enhancing and encouraging South-South cooperation and facilitating a collective dialogue of the South countries with the industrialized nation-states.

The defense spending was one fifth of the total government expenditure. He helped India enhance her image and stature in world politics. India’s standing in the world had improved a great deal the only unresolved issue was that of SriLanka for which he lost his life.

Science and poverty cannot co-exist.'
Rajiv Gandhi laid great emphasis on the green revolution which he looked upon as being extremely important for agricultural development. He spoke ardently about social justice. For him, equality among people was extremely important, because a society ridden with class and caste distinction was a hindrance to development.
Rajiv Gandhi was posthumously awarded the Highest National Award of India, Bharat Ratna 1991.

One should remember Rajiv Gandhi in the wake of CAG report
The Parliament has been witnessing stormy scenes in the wake of recent CAG report on coal block allocations. India’s Comptroller and Audit General (CAG) Vinod Rai in his report has noted in his report “The government and auditors are not adversaries but are on the same table since the objective is to upgrade governance and to ensure a totally leakage-free delivery system of government projects, schemes and practices to ensure there are no loopholes and lacunae”. By this what he meant was that the benefit of the schemes and policies meant for the people should reach them without any lapses, transparently.
Here we should recall what our former Prime Minister RajivGandhi had said. The creator of modern India had said that 85 paise per rupee allocated for development got siphoned off before reaching the intended beneficiaries. On many occasions he expressed his concern that the poor are unable to avail the benefits of the welfare funds sent for them by the government the way it should have been.
His son and Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi also has been quoting his father’s statement that when centre sanctions one rupee for the poor only 15 paisa reaches them. The young Congress MP from Amethi also has his own idea to ensure transparency in administration and he wants further upliftment of the downtrodden. Rahul Gandhi is having the opinion that Aadhar UID card will ensure more transparency in the safe passage of the central funds to the poor without any hindrance. "Every citizen of this country will have an identity card as a proof of their existence by the Aadhar scheme. Further the card will include the Bank account number along with the Aadhar Card Number so as to ensure connectivity and transparency and with this the Central funds will directly reach the account holder," argues Rahul Gandhi.
The recent CAG findings clearly underline the need for ensuring transparency in public administration. If the government sends any amount of money for the welfare of the poor, it is also necessary that it makes sure that the entire funds reach the beneficiaries. The development of our nation will be possible only if we ensure this fact.. That is what Rajiv Gandhi wanted, Rahul Gandhi argues for and the people have been eagerly waiting for.

Rajiv Gandhi put India on the top of the fast moving countries
Today India has a strong standing in the field of Information Technology throughout the globe and the credit goes to Rajiv Gandhi.
Rajiv Gandhi had said “We need to ensure that newest of technology is utilized and used at the rural level. We need to befriend Science and technology to jump to higher notches.”
“He raised the confidence of the nation. He emphasized on the role of technology, Information Technology in particular. I think he showed to the world that he had a dream, he ‘too had a dream’ as he said. We all got enthused by seeing a young, idealistic and dynamic person. Rajiv Gandhi was one of the two people whose death invoked great sentiments in me because he was Young, dynamic and he had a vision for India for the future. He was an extraordinary leader and I think we all are going to miss him. I wish he had lived longer, says Narayan Moorti, founder , Infosys.
Decades before, Rajiv Gandhi had imagined the world of today. During his tenure he initiated a lot of programmes for the progress of technology. He laid stress on the development of fields like Space research , Nuclear research , Genetic Engineering , Genetic Biology and Computer software development.
Rajiv Gandhi had the conviction to change his dreams into reality. He wanted to development initiatives to be treated like a mission and so all his targets were his missions rather.
Rajiv Gandhi’s emphasis on Panchayti Raj explains the fact that he believed that in a country like India or for that matter any country the real power ,be it political or administrative, cannot be fully tapped and democratized without women. Rajiv Gandhi was not only interested in the technological development of the country but he had equal interest in maintaining the national culture. He wanted the structure of development to be uniform and in sync with the national culture.
Today on his Martyrdom day, Nation salutes the visionary.

A tribute to Rajiv Gandhi
Rajiv Gandhi used to say that he has a vision to see India at the pinnacle of her glory and march forward as a country knitted in the fabric of democracy. He was always concerned about the delivery system and he used to say that funds earmarked for rural development hardly reach at the grass roots. He aimed at rectifying this flow and Panchayati Raj in an effective manner was his brainchild. In the field of agriculture, new advances have been made with modern set of equipments and a supportive technology for optimum utilization of resources for maximum output.
If India today is at the threshold of being a great economic power, a resurgent middle-class with a great purchasing power, we have to acknowledge the lead role that Rajiv Gandhi had played. He will always be remembered with love and respect. He has made his place in history as a man who led the break-through of India into a vibrant global economic power.

21st May 1991, Sri Perumbudur was rocked by a blast. Suicide attacker had succeeded in their evil motives. They snatched away Rajivji from us and the progressive movement of a developing nation was brought to a screeching halt. This was an international conspiracy, that many top world leaders were afraid about. The then Palestinian President Yasir Arafat had serious concerns about such an attack on Rajiv Gandhi and so he had also warned him.
It was Rajiv Gandhi’s modern vision that made India one of the leading fast moving countries in the world. Today we hear the success stories of many IT giants like Infosys, TCS and Wipro but this could not have been possible without Rajiv Gandhi’s long term vision.
Rajiv Gandhi’s concept of modernisation was not just modernization of industry but more fundamentally modernisation of minds and attitudes. He wanted the scientists and technologists to work and solve the problems relating to water-management and improved sanitation so that the people particularly in the rural areas get a better quality of life.
